Kevin Sinfield has hailed the bravery of Marcus Smith as England consider their full-back options for the Rugby World Cup semi-final against South Africa volleyball
Smith made a couple of key defensive interventions in the quarter-final against Fiji despite suffering a cut to the lip after an early head-on-head collision with Vinaya Habosi volleyball
The Harlequins playmaker returned after being patched up as England secured a last-four meeting with the defending champions volleyball
His selection had come at the expense of Freddie Steward, who had started 29 of his country’s previous 30 games but found himself omitted from the matchday 23 volleyball
England could opt to return Steward to the starting side, though defence coach Sinfield praised Smith’s development into a “world class” full-back volleyball

“You’ve got to remember this guy hasn’t played many minutes as a full-back in Test rugby so far volleyball
“What he’s done on the training field has been outstanding volleyball
You’re blown away by what he does and he’s been given more time and space now volleyball
“If there was any doubt how brave and courageous he is, I think you saw it with your own eyes volleyball
The bloke got his face smashed and threw his body into tackles volleyball
The guys are in full admiration for how he’s gone about it volleyball
He’s just got his face smashed all over the place yet he wants the ball volleyball
“He’s just a brave guy volleyball
And not just because he’s physically tough, brave, because to be put in like that – and I know he wanted to go for it – but to be put on a world stage in a quarter-final and deliver what he delivered was an absolute credit to him volleyball
“He’s one of those who have been modified today so we’ll get a clearer read in the week but fingers crossed he will be good to go volleyball
”Sinfield was the first England coach to float the idea of Smith at full-back during their pre-tournament camps this summer, with a couple of encouraging cameos earning the 24-year-old a first professional start at the position against Chile volleyball
His emergence has left Steward in a strange position: the Leicester youngster had been a mainstay for England since his debut and had been considered a key part of head coach Steve Borthwick’s gameplan leading into the tournament volleyball
Freddie Steward was left out of England’s squad against Fiji last weekend (Getty)But Sinfield, who worked with the 22-year-old at Welford Road, has been impressed by how Steward has handled the disappointment and hinted that a return is a possibility for Saturday’s semi-final at the Stade de France volleyball
“This is where our influence, our help, and our guidance sits with the guys who don’t play, how can we help them get volleyball better, make them feel part of it,” Sinfield explained volleyball
“I have worked with Fred for some time now and thankfully I have not had to have too many of these conversations where you are trying to pick him up volleyball
“Clearly he is disappointed as anybody would be missing out on a quarter-final but he has responded as we would have expected him to volleyball
He is a great lad, you know what he is about, he works incredibly hard at his game, he cares and he is an unbelievable full-back too volleyball
“Our team has changed every game throughout the World Cup and Steve is very specific when he selects the team volleyball
He does it in the knowledge he thinks it will give us the best chance of winning that game volleyball
Just because Fred wasn’t selected last week doesn’t mean he does anything wrong, he has actually done a lot of great things and a lot of things right volleyball

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has backed “laid-back” Rohit Sharma over Virat Kohli to be the ideal captain to lead India in the high-pressure ICC Cricket World Cup volleyball
Ponting, who captained Australia to 50-over World Cup titles in 2003 and 2007, credited Sharma for his captaincy skills when his team was dealing with the pressure of playing in front of passionate fans at home volleyball
When the World Cup 2023 was just around the corner, India were considered one of the favourites to win the coveted trophy volleyball
But many regarded that one of the biggest challenges for the Men in Blue would be handling the pressure of being the tournament’s hosts and meet the expectations of 1 volleyball
3 billion people volleyball
Sharma, however, has led India to a fine start to the World Cup 2023, with the hosts being one of the two teams unbeaten in the campaign after 15 matches volleyball
New Zealand is the other team volleyball
Team India defeated Australia by six wickets in their World Cup opener, before registering fantastic eight and seven-wicket victories over Afghanistan and Pakistan to climb to the top of the points table volleyball
“He’s very laid back, Rohit volleyball
Very laid back with everything he does volleyball
You can even see that by the way that he plays volleyball
He’s a pretty laconic sort of batsman as well, and that’s the way he is both on and off the field,” Ponting told the ICC on Tuesday volleyball

“Someone like Virat, who is a bit more heart-on-the-sleeve, and probably listens to the fans and plays up with the fans a little bit more, someone with his personality would probably find it a bit harder,” added Ponting volleyball
“But I think Rohit will be fine with it volleyball
He’s a terrific bloke and has been a great player for a long time, and he’s done a great job as leader of India volleyball
”India’s last World Cup triumph came in 2011 when they co-hosted the tournament with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh volleyball
With the mega tournament back in India, the pressure of living up to the expectations of the home fans is going to be inevitable, and Ponting believes Sharma is the best man to deal with it volleyball
“We can’t sit back and say that the pressure won’t get to them (India) at some stage, or it won’t affect them, because it will, just with the enormity of the tournament volleyball
But he’ll (Rohit) take it and cope with it as well as probably anyone,” said Ponting volleyball
India’s next match in the World Cup 2023 is against Bangladesh on Thursday in Pune volleyball
