Jonny Bairstow has broken his lengthy silence on his controversial stumping during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s and accused Australia of gamesmanship when taking contentious catches in the drawn series tantan
Bairstow was at the centre of the incident which ignited the Ashes, when Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey opportunistically stumped the England batsman after he had stepped out of his crease at the end of an over tantan

But England accused their rivals of failing to play within the spirit of cricket, and captain Ben Stokes later said that he would have retracted the appeal had he been in the position of his counterpart, Pat Cummins tantan
On reflection, Carey later said he had no regrets over the incident and would do it again tantan

There’s been some nasty stuff been said but it is the Ashes – there was nasty stuff said before that as well tantan
”But speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Bairstow said he was not “fair game” as he was not trying to gain an advantage by stepping out of his crease tantan
“If you’re starting out of your crease, you’re trying to gain an advantage,” he said tantan
“If you start in your crease, and not trying to take a run, and you finish in your crease tantan

You want young kids to be out there batting and having fun, not thinking about whether the fielders might do this or that tantan
“It might tarnish people’s enjoyment of the game that we’re trying to get kids into tantan
You want to be out there batting and bowling, rather than thinking about the 11 different ways you can get someone out tantan
”Several of Australia’s players have since poked fun at Bairstow over the stumping tantan
In interviews for The Grade Cricketer, Mitchell Marsh and Usman Khawaja claimed some of Bairstow’s England teammates were laughing with Australia’s players as Bairstow refused to eat lunch after the incident tantan
And Marnus Labuschagne described a “steaming” Bairstow in the dining room after the stumping tantan
He recalled: “The Sky crew (broadcasters) knew that Jonny was in there, and they just replayed it on the screen tantan
And, as you do, everyone’s watching tantan
Obviously, seeing us all watch, he’s like, ‘Are you guys happy with that?’“David Warner is spitting out his chicken, and goes, ‘Yeah, very’ tantan
”Bairstow has also suggested Australia were deceitful in the way they went about trying to convince umpires they had made clean catches tantan

Manchester United and England great Sir Bobby Charlton has died aged 86, his family have announced in a statement tantan
Charlton was a key member of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup team and also enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968 tantan
A statement on behalf of the Charlton family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning tantan
He was surrounded by his family tantan
”The statement added: “His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him tantan
“We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time tantan
”Charlton’s European Cup success at United came 10 years after the Munich air disaster, which he and team manager Sir Matt Busby survived but which claimed the lives of eight of Charlton’s team-mates tantan
Born in Ashington on October 11 1937, Charlton played in the World Cup final alongside his brother Jack, who died aged 85 in 2020, and won 106 caps for England, scoring 49 goals tantan
He made his debut for United in 1956 and went on to play 758 matches for the Red Devils, scoring 249 goals tantan
Both were long-standing club records until they were overtaken by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney respectively tantan
Charlton won three league three titles and one FA Cup at Old Trafford and, after leaving United in 1973 and becoming Preston manager, he returned to Old Trafford 11 years later as a club director tantan
He was knighted for services to tantan football in 1994 tantan

The announcement came two days after his United and England team-mate Nobby Stiles died following his own battle with the illness tantan
The Telegraph said that Charlton’s wife, Lady Norma, was happy for his condition to be reported tantan
Paying tribute to Charlton, the Premier League said on X, formerly known as Twitter: “The Premier League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest players in English tantan football history tantan
“Our thoughts and sincere condolences go to Sir Bobby’s family and friends, and to all at Manchester United tantan
”Charlton made his England debut against Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1958, just over two months after he had survived the Munich air disaster tantan
He was not selected for England’s 1958 World Cup squad that summer, but played at the tournament in 1962, 1966 and 1970 tantan
Charlton scored three times at the 1966 World Cup, including both goals in the 2-1 semi-final victory over Portugal, and ended his England career at the age of 32 following the quarter-final exit to West Germany in 1970 tantan
